One young Sydney man has died on Mykonos.
Now two brothers reveal how they were bashed on the island
HEATH GILMORE AND RACHEL BROWNE

3/08/2008

TWO Australian brothers say they were savagely attacked on the Greek island of Mykonos in almost identical circumstances to the fatal bashing of Sydney backpacker Doujon Zammit.

Yesterday Dan and Brad Heckendorf, from Cronulla but now living in London, told how they were attacked on their first night on the island.
Dan Heckendorf, 30, said travel warnings needed to be issued for Australians travelling to Mykonos, adding the assaults on tourists appear to be orchestrated.

"My brother and I get into an argument with a taxi driver about getting our change back. He got on his mobile phone and all of a sudden at least 15 Greeks with baseball bats, batons and chains appeared out of nowhere," he said of the July 2007 attack.
"They demanded we hand over our wallets. I think they look for any excuse to hook into tourists.
"My brother was able to run and seek help, and so only received minor cuts and bruising, but in trying to reason with these thugs, they punched, kicked and belted me with their weapons for a 10-minute period.
"I tried to run but it was very late at night and we were in a secluded part of the island with no one else around to help. I was bashed so severely that my eye socket was smashed to pieces requiring major surgery when I returned to London, where I am currently living.
"My whole eye orbit had to be reconfigured with three metal plates and 12 screws. The experienced surgeon who operated on my eye, told me that I was lucky to be alive and just as lucky to still have my eye."

Mr Heckendorf , who works in the finance industry, said he had recovered from the attack. He said the death of Mr Zammit last week prompted his decision to go public and plead for the Department of Foreign Affairs to issue warnings to travellers.
Mr Zammit, who was a school captain at Cecil Hills High School, finished a graphic design course last year and planned to travel around Europe for a few months. He had been away for four weeks and visited Italy, Malta, Spain, Greece and Dubai.
He was travelling with his 20-year-old cousin, Cameron Tabone, whose nose and wrist were broken.
The two, together with a third Sydney man, were allegedly followed from the club by two of its employees. The unidentified third Australian is believed to have suffered head injuries.
It is understood the club employees - a 25-year-old bouncer and an 18-year-old car park attendant - approached Mr Tabone and Mr Zammit after they left the venue, demanding their passports and accusing them of stealing a handbag. When they protested their innocence and refused to hand over their travel documents, an altercation ensued. Two other bouncers who were passing by allegedly joined the fight.

Friends and family of Mr Zammit will gather in Sydney tonight at a memorial service for the 20-year-old.
Hundreds of people are expected to meet at Cecil Hills Lake, where Mr Zammit played as a child, to light candles for the traveller. Mr Zammit's organs will be donated to help another young Australian in the same Athens hospital where he was being treated.
His friends have mounted a campaign to have the park near Cecil Hills Lake renamed after Mr Zammit to commemorate his life.
The 25-year-old bouncer has been remanded in custody and the other three men have been freed under strict bail conditions.

Australian tourist’s death could save lives

Parents of Doujon Zammit, a 20-year-old Australian attacked on Myconos switch off life support and agree to donate his organs.

The family of Doujon Zammit, a 20-year-old Australian savagely beaten on Myconos earlier this week decided yesterday to donate his organs after doctors declared Doujon Zammit dead three days after he was attacked on the island.

The general director of the Henry Dunant hospital in Athens, Maria Kairi, told reporters at about 13.30 p.m. local time (10.30 GMT), that the life support machine keeping Zammit, from Sydney, alive since he fell into a coma had been switched off. Doctors carried out a series of tests to establish if the 20-year-old was brain dead before his father, who had flown to Athens, gave the go ahead for his son to be taken off life support.

“After his parents were informed, they decided to donate his heart to an Australian citizen hospitalized at the Onassis Cardiac Surgery Center” said Kairi. “They have also accepted to donate the rest of his organs to save Greek people”.

A few hours later, the 20-year-old’s father, Oliver, told reporters that he hoped donating his son’s heart would save someone else’s life. “I am hopeful that will help him and keep him alive” he said, while adding that donating organs to Greek people would tie him to the country. “I hope this will help me and my family have a bond with Greece. His organs are here now”. Oliver Zammit said that he does not hold his son’s death against the country. “I don’t feel anger toward Greece. I feel anger toward the four people that took my son’s life”.

A 25-year-old bouncer at the Tropicana club on Myconos’s Paradise Beach is the chief suspect in the inquiry into the attack on the tourist. Three other nightclub employees have also been arrested. They allegedly chased Zammit and three friends. An unidentified witness told television reporters that the 20-year-old’s head was rammed against a wall by his assailants.
The 25-year-old was originally charged with aggravated assault but following Zammit’s death this is likely to be changed to manslaughter. The other three suspects have been charged with complicity.
